Trembling bone deep cold. How could anyone sleep with their body vibrating constantly, trying to keep warm? Cole didn’t know how it was possible, but it was. He’d closed his eyes, slumped down against the wall and sleep simply took hold of him.

Hours later, in the pitch of night, a sound woke him. At first, he wasn’t sure if he’d dreamt it. A single shot, the thump of a body. But then his eyes were wide and his senses were on fire. He inhaled through his nose, the tang of too much metal greeted him.

“Hear that?” Liam hissed.

“Yeah,” Cole answered.

Thank God, for a minute there he’d thought the worst. For a few precious seconds, he thought someone had come for Liam, killing him in the night without so much as a protest. But his buddy was still here and alive, that was good.

The sound of careful footsteps floated towards them. Cole held his breath, worked to calm himself down. Boots were placed as quietly as possible in the dark. Then there was a beam of light. Cole squinted and held up his hand as a flashlight passed over his cell.

“Boy-o,” Cookie exhaled. “What sort of trouble you got us into, huh?”

“Cook, shit.” Liam gasped in the cell next to him. “How the fuck did you get in here? Tell me you didn’t waste the guys guarding this place.”

“No,” Cookie assured him, then grinned. “Just the one. The other two took off running when his body dropped between them.”

Groaning, Liam lurched and shuffled in the cell next door. Cole smirked, rising to his feet. His bones cried out in protest, aching from the cold, but Cole ignored the feeling. Time to get out of here, he thought. His eyes traveled over Cookie’s body, to both his hands and pockets.

“Where are the keys?” Cole asked, squinting.

“About that.” Cookie sighed. “I figured they’d be at the front desk or even on the guy I dropped. No such luck. Any idea where they’d be?”

“Holy. Shit.” Liam cursed. “You already shot Hannah’s brother, and now you’ve killed another one of his men. We’re so screwed.”

“Hey.” Cookie frowned. “Nice to see you too, you ungrateful bastard. And I didn’t know it was Hannah’s brother, only heard about it after. Plus, he’s lucky you came out and ruined my shot. He’d be dancing with the devil right now if not.”

“Well, Cookie…” Cole ran a hand down his face. “You don’t happen to have a few sticks of dynamite on you, do you?”

“Nope.”

“Great. That’s just great.”
